The Dunes at the Petrified Forest

I’ll be honest, I probably would not have put the Petrified Forest high on my list had it not been for the recommendation for a fellow I met while spending more time than I would have liked waiting on a delayed flight out of Rockford.

Day one of the road trip from Arizona to Illinois found us meandering thru Northwest Arizona, finally making it to the Petrified Forest, a resting place for trees that lived during the late Triassic period, some 225 million years ago! These tepees that you see here are from the same period, showing their colorful bands of mud stone and sandstone.
