A neat trick that you can use to judge the time left in the day before the sun will hit the horizon is by using only what’s on your body. Hold your hands out at arms length, fingers together. Each finger represents about 15 minutes, so your palm width is approximately one hour. Start at the horizon and hold hand over hand until you reach the sun, and add up your fingers. Quick and easy trick for real time field calculations.
Fall Sun Setting Over Empty Fields
For me it’s not all about colors of the sunsets. They sometimes feel even better to me when you can feel the light coming thru the clouds. This seems to happen best about 30 minutes to and hour before actual sunset, so if you’ve got a sky full of clouds and a sun heading towards the horizon, keep your eyes to the west.
