I think I want to start shooting some more cityscapes, but landscapes are just so much more fun to get to… Photographer problems…
I took this shot last year during my stint in the city, and thought it was fitting as we move in to this year’s Christmas season. ‘It’s beginning to look a lot light Christmas’ is stuck in my head today, but I’ve taken a new liking to carols this year, so it’s okay by me.
So I’m a little behind schedule with the website, I’ve got a list a half a page long of new things that I’d like to add, and some changes that need to be made. Be patient with me, they are coming! Also, I promise to have at least 4 new photos a week, and I’ll do a re-cap of the road trip from Illinois to Oregon!
There’s something about looking down on a city that adds a little extra to it. A little after dusk, the colors of the sky were slowly fading away, but the colors of the city were just beginning. A glow comes out of times square, where tourists and locals (probably more tourists) take to the streets to catch a show, or grab a dinner, all happening well below what you see from up here…
Design ChangesYou’ll notice some design changes over the next weeks, so that’s going to unfortunately be occupying a good bit of my time, but hopefully I’ll have some time to knock out a couple of new photos from New Orleans. But, in the mean time, here’s a little behind the scenes of a shot. I’ll give you the full scoop as to why this was a little extra cool when I finish up the shot.
There is soooo much movement in Grand Central Station, that it seems strange that you could take a 2 second exposure and have any one person stay all that still, but in this one moment, there was a single family posing for a picture, that all three stayed still! I had a couple shots where everyone was in some sort of motion, but this one seemed to have a little more essence to in because of that family, standing there waving to someone that must have been standing right next to me.
TED Talks, do you ever listen to these? Here’s their title line: “Riveting talks by remarkable people, free to the world”. I like to just sit and listen to different talks while I’m working. It’s almost soothing, you know. One that I heard recently was by Shawn Achor, who talked about some simple things you can and should do every day, that I found so important to my happiness that I wrote them down. They are gratitudes, journaling, exercise, meditation, and random acts of kindness. I’ve put my journal back in my bag, and plan on working on my meditation.
The best part about shooting at night is, generally, that you are completely alone. Even in a city as big as New York, late in to the night people are generally less abundant, and when looking for interesting new views of different buildings and structures, you’ll often find yourself in a quiet place, hopefully with some music in your iPod and the soft click of a shutter to break the silence.

Some people say I get a little too close to the edge, but I read a quote the other day that kind of puts in perspective.
If you’re not living on the edge, you’re taking up too much space.
I don’t really know if that applies to getting too close to physical edges, where you could potentially fall, but sometimes that’s where the best photos are, so what can you do?!

This is an inspiring photo for me, and one that I almost didn’t get. After a long night of shooting at the top of the Rockefeller center, I almost skipped trying to wander around and find the Atlas statue. Good thing I didn’t, as it turned out to be a perfect night to check it out. The streets were empty, and it was great to stand and enjoy the statue and it’s inspiration.
